| Thomas H. Murray is president of the Hastings Center, a nonprofit
research institute devoted to issues of bioethics located in Garrison,
New York, just north of New York City. He is also one of the most
prominent U.S. experts on bioethics issues. With a total of more
than 200 publications, Murray has published extensively in peer-reviewed
scientific journals as well as popular media. He is co-editor of
the Encyclopedia of Ethical, Legal and Policy Issues in Biotechnology
(2000), and author of a recent book, The Worth of a Child.
He has testified before Congress on numerous occasions and served as a
consultant to government agencies and other organizations. He was
appointed by President Clinton to the National Bioethics Advisory Commission
and chaired the Commission's subcommittee on genetics. Other advisory
bodies on which he has served include the Working Group on Ethical, Legal
and Social Issues of the National Institutes of Health Center for Human
Genome Research and the NIH Human Embryo Research Panel.
Murray holds a B.A. from Temple University and a Ph.D. from Princeton
in social psychology. Prior to assuming his present position at the Hastings
Center, he served on the faculties of Miami University, the University
of Texas, and Case Western Reserve University. At Case-Western, he
held the Susan E. Watson Chair in Bioethics.
