| At a black-tie gala at the Hudson Theater, just off Times Square
in New York last Monday night, July 22, the World
Technology Network handed out the Oscars of the techie world, the 2002
World Technology Awards. Presented to honor individuals and organizations
who contribute to the advancement of emerging technologies for the benefit
of business and society, the awards are oriented to the future,
rather than (as is often the case with such awards) the past. The
judges are asked to focus on those nominees whose work is likely to have
the greatest future significance. The recipients include a remarkably
diverse array of creative, accomplished individuals and organizations ranging
from the IBM Corporation to the founder of India's Barefoot College.
The primary goal of the World Technology Network is "encouraging
serendipity" by "serving as a cross between a global meeting ground, a
virtual think-tank, and a community." "The Network, in the words
of its organizers, is "a catalyst... for new ideas, new relationships,
and new opportunities, oriented around the variety of emerging technologies
such as information and communications technology, new materials, new energy
and new space technologies, and biotechnology, which are having and which
soon will have such enormous impact on business
As a member of the network and chair of the policy section of the World Technology Summit, which preceded the awards ceremony, I attended both events. The award winners are listed below, together with links to additional information about them. A few pictures from the events are also included with this Tidbit of the Week. |
