| July 19 will mark the two year anniversary of "Teich's Tech Tidbits."
There have been 88 Tidbits since the feature was started, including several
specials covering more than one week. Topics have ranged from distributed
computing to cheese. In the topical index, the esthetics and culture
category has the largest number of entries (after "miscellaneous"), followed
by Internet and telecommunications. This page lists the ten most
popular Tidbits (as measured by number of hits) over this two year span.
The winners, not surprisingly, are those that have been up for the longest
time and those with the most external links.
The top ten Tidbits are listed below in descending order of popularity. |
|
Centennial of the Paper Clip -- November 8, 1999. Number one Tidbit (and one of Teich's favorites). Everything about paper clips, from who invented them, to how they are made, to where to buy gold-plated clips. Baseball Tech -- October 4, 1999. Could Babe Ruth have hit 80 home runs with the benefit of today's technology? Will Barry Bonds do it in 2001? Vacationing in Space -- July 24, 2000. Dennis Tito was the first space tourist. Is he a trend-setter or just a rich oddball? Special: U.S. Presidential Candidates' Views on Science & Technology -- October 9, 2000. Al Gore had more highly articulated views on science and technology policy than George W. Bush. He lost. Electroluminescence (aka Indiglo) -- March 13, 2000. Does your watch face glow pale blue or green? Learn how Indiglo technology works and what else it can do. What Time Is It (on the Internet)? -- June 19, 2000. Find out what time it is in Ouagadougou, read about "the long now," or get the correct time as measured in "Swatch Beats." Wireless Text Messaging -- March 19, 2001. The technology that keeps teens in touch also brought down a government. Happy Birthday, Silly Putty -- December 11, 2000. More than 4,500 tons of this stuff have been sold since it went on the market in 1950. Celebrate 50 years of Silly Putty with the special gold edition. Technologist Wins Nobel Prize -- December 18, 2000. Most Nobel Prizes are awarded for basic research, but Jack Kilby won one for inventing the microchip. The Pocket Protector -- July 19, 1999. The first Tidbit, appropriately enough was devoted to the much maligned pocket protector, emblem of techies all over the world. |
