Top Ten Top Ten Lists of Tech Sites

Top Ten

Tidbit Archive

The incredible size of the World Wide Web and the variety of sites of widely-varying quality that can be found on it make roadmaps or guideposts essential.  Many of these take the form of top 10, top 50, or top 100 lists of web sites on particular subjects.  What are the top ten technology sites on the web?  That depends on who you ask and what their definition of "technology" is.  Increasingly, and especially on the web, "technology" is coming to mean "computers and the Internet."

Rather than put together my own "top ten" list this week, I've scoured the web for other people's "top 10" lists of technology sites.  Here are my top ten:

1. "Best of the Web:  Technology," Brill's Content, April 2000.  Mostly computer and web-related sites.

2.  "Top of the Web:  Technology," 3CentsWorth.com.  Mostly corporate sites:  telecomm, computers, and Internet, plus a good list of search engines.

3.  "Hot Sites - Inside Tech," USA Today, updated daily. An eclectic mix -- March 24 listing included everything from fixing appliances to the new, improved Twinkies project.

4.  "Technology in the North," top sites from Industry Canada, mostly related to industrial devlopment and innovation. (Version Francais)

5.  Top Ten Technology News Sites.  A "top ten" list with 23 listings.

6.  Technology sites in the Top 100.net Magazine, issue 69 (United Kingdom).  Mainly computers, but also includes a couple of interesting cultural diversions, such as spark online (an online magazine devoted to "exploring electronic consciousness") and "Tomorrow's World," a series on the third millennium from the BBC.

7.  "50 Best of the Web," Popular Science magazine.  Nicely styled list divided into categories such as "Moving Science" (transportation), "Eclectic Science," "Inventions and Labs," etc.

8.  "Top Women-Related Science and Technology Sites" by Joan Korenman, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. A fairly long list, but interesting and useful for the study of gender and technology.

9.  "Microsoft's Top Ten Technology Picks."  Gadgets from Bill Gates and the boys.

10.  100hot Technology Sites.  The web's popularity contest -- a listing of the most visited technology sites, all computer-related, of course.
